At McKeone, we’re committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety, compliance, and transparency on every site. Below you’ll find our current policies and procedures designed to keep our team, subcontractors, and community safe. Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with these documents before commencing work.

  • Mckeone is committed to ensuring the health and safety of all employees and others who may be affected by issues arising from the engagement of contractors.

    Management of Mckeone will ensure the following:

    1. Contractors are suitably qualified to perform the tasks;

    2. In possession of all necessary licences, permits, registrations and insurances, required to perform the works safely and in compliance with appropriate regulations;

    3. Contractors are notified of any potential hazards associated with the location or use of the area where the works are to be carried out;

    4. Contractors will be briefed on the necessity to perform all works in a safe manner and where appropriate in accordance with OHS Regulations, Codes of Practice and Australian Standards.

    Preparation of Safety Documents

    1. It is the responsibility of the contractor to ensure SWMS are provided for high risk work & SDS’s are prepared for hazardous chemicals and are supplied in a timely manner at the commencement of the build.

    General Conditions for Compliance by Contractors

    Site Boundaries

    1. Boundaries will be delineated according to circumstances and the nature of work taking place and may include the erection of barricades, fencing, warning signs and or lights, locked doors, gates, witches hats, or total enclosure of the work site and or agreed methods;

    2. In determining work boundaries every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the normal work activities in the area.  The health and safety of Mckeone employees, must not be adversely affected by the contractor.

    Contractors Vehicles at the worksite

    1. Contractors vehicles must not obstruct roads, driveways, escape routes from buildings or fire protection equipment;

    2. Arrangement for contractors work vehicles to have access to the work site will be arranged through Management of the Mckeone.

    Housekeeping

    1. The contractor is responsible for cleanliness, order and hygiene at the work site.  All materials required on site must be stored safely within the boundary of the work site;

    2. Electrical leads, hoses, pipes must be suitably supported and or adequately protected to prevent injury to pedestrians;

    3. Unless otherwise agreed the contractor will be responsible for ensuring restoration of the work site to a condition that is free from risk to health and safety;

    4. Contractors are required to remove all rubbish and left over materials from site unless otherwise specified by Management of Mckeone.

    5. Small quantities of flammable liquid, for example solvent based paints and enamels, may be kept near the point of use, providing sealed containers are used, there are no open flames or spark generating equipment in the vicinity, and adequate fire protection equipment is at hand;

    6. Where there is a possibility that dust, noise fumes or other emissions from a work site will impinge on areas outside the site and the health, safety or comfort of people outside the site may suffer as a consequence, every effort must be made to;

      — Control the emission at its source

      — Contain the emission within the work site

      — Find an alternative work method and or time of work

      — Remove people from the vicinity until the work causing the emissions is completed.

    Contractors Tools, Machinery and Equipment

    1. All tools, machinery and equipment to be used in the conduct of the contracted work are to be supplied by the contractor;

    2. All tools are to be adequate for the task, maintained in good order and condition and inspected in accordance with appropriate statutory requirements or standards;

    3. Machinery such as cranes, forklifts, motor vehicles, motor cycles, front end loaders and other equipment subject to statutory certification of operators shall only be operated by those suitably qualified.

    Ladders, Scaffolding and Mobile Towers

    1. The provisions of the Scaffolding Act, especially regarding the erection by certified persons, are to be strictly observed;

    2. All ladders, scaffolding and mobile towers used by contractors are to be in good order and condition and of approved design and construction.  Home mad ladders are not acceptable to be used;

    3. Damaged ladders are to be removed from service;

    4. All necessary precautions must be taken by the contractor to protect people from falling debris, tools, equipment etc., before overhead work commences.

    Personal Protective Equipment

    1. The Contractor shall supply Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the contractor’ s employees, which is appropriate for the hazards;

    2. Personal protective Equipment shall comply with current statutory or standard specifications;

    3. The PPE required shall be listed on the Form titled “Contractor Work Permit”.

    4. The Contractor is responsible for ensuring that the PPE provided to employees is used when required;

    5. The contractor shall provide suitable storage facilities for all PPE.

    Fire Protection

    1. The contractor is responsible for fire protection at the work site;

    2. Fire protection alarms, fixed installations and ancillary equipment such as pumps and water supplies shall not be shut down or altered by the Contractor without the authorisation of Management of the Mckeone.

    3. Contractors will be issued with a copy of Mckeone’s Standard Fire orders for evacuation;

    First Aid Treatment

    1. The Contractor is responsible for providing First Aid at the work site in accordance with the Victorian Code of Practice for First Aid in the workplace;

    2. Mckeone will treat minor injuries incurred by Contractors and provide interim support for more serious injuries.

    Accident Reporting

    1. The contractor is responsible for the reporting and recording of accidents and injuries that occur on the work site in accordance with statutory provisions;

    2. All accidents shall be reported to the Management of Mckeone.

    3. All accidents shall be investigated by the Contractor and suitable corrective/preventive measures will be implemented to prevent a recurrence;

    4. Management of Mckeone reserve the right to undertake an investigation of accidents/injuries that occur to Contractor’s whilst on the company site and to require the Contractor to implement suitable corrective/preventive measures where indicated.

    Contractor Instructions to Employees

    1. Contractors shall instruct their employees concerning work site health and safety.

    Emergency Procedures

    1. Contractors are required to observe the emergency procedures of Mckeone at all times including the instructions of Fire Wardens.

    2. Contractors should identify the nearest exits to the work area and the location of emergency assembly points.

    Smoking Policy

    1. Contractors are required to comply with Mckeone Smoking Policy when working at this site.

  • Mckeone is committed to minimizing UV radiation exposure risks by implementing effective control measures to protect employees working outdoors.

    Procedures

    • Work should be scheduled to avoid peak UV exposure hours (11 am – 3 pm during daylight savings, 10 am – 2 pm otherwise) where possible.

    • Natural or artificial shade should be provided.

    • Employees must wear protective clothing, including long sleeves, hats, and sunglasses.

    • SPF 30+ sunscreen should be applied to exposed skin.

    • Where UV exposure cannot be avoided, task rotation should be implemented to limit prolonged sun exposure.

    • Compliance with this policy is mandatory, and failure to adhere may result in disciplinary action.

  • Mckeone ensures compliance with PPE requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004. PPE is used as a last resort when other risk controls are not feasible.

    Procedures

    • PPE must be worn as designated for specific tasks.

    • Employees and subcontractors are responsible for maintaining their PPE.

    • PPE should be properly fitted and meet safety standards.

    • Subcontractors are required to supply their own PPE and must wear it in accordance with the employer's Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS).

    • Non-compliance may result in disciplinary action, including termination.

  • Mckeone fosters a proactive approach to resolving workplace health and safety issues through consultation and cooperation.

    Procedures

    1. Report safety concerns to the supervisor or via our Incident Reporting portal.

    2. Management will assess and consult affected parties.

    3. Considerations for resolution include:

      • WorkSafe reporting requirements

      • Risk isolation and mitigation

      • Temporary safety measures

      • Environmental monitoring

    4. If unresolved, an external OHS advisor or WorkSafe officer may be involved.

    5. All resolutions will be documented and communicated to relevant parties.

  • Employee & Subcontractor Responsibilities

    • all accidents to a supervisor within 24 hours.

    • If needed, seek assistance from a First Aid Officer.

    • Complete the Incident Report within 24 hours.

    • Retain a copy of the Incident report (this will be emailed to you via the platform)

    • If medical attention is required, notify the supervisor immediately.

    Manager/Supervisor Responsibilities

    • Conduct an accident investigation within 24 hours.

    • Implement temporary safety controls if necessary.

    • Interview witnesses and review workplace conditions.

    • Complete an Incident ReportASAP - no later than 24 hours after.

    • Provide recommendations for corrective actions and additional safety training.

  • Mckeone is committed to maintaining a safe and productive work environment for all employees, subcontractors, and clients. The use of drugs or alcohol can impair judgment and performance, posing significant risks to workplace safety. To ensure a secure and responsible work environment, Mckeone enforces a strict no-tolerance policy regarding drugs and alcohol during work hours.

    Procedures

    • The consumption of alcohol or drugs that affects work performance is strictly prohibited.

    • Employees using prescribed substances that may impact performance must inform their supervisor.

    • Under no circumstances should an employee be under the influence of illegal drugs while at work.

    • Employees requiring support for substance-related issues will have access to assistance programs.

    • Employees must present themselves fit and ready for work at all times.

    • If an employee is suspected of being under the influence at work, they will be stood down until they are deemed fit to return.

    • Employees violating this policy will receive two written warnings before termination.

  • compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act Victoria, 2004, Mckeone maintains a smoke-free and vape-free workplace to ensure the health and well-being of employees.

    Procedures

    • Smoking and vaping are prohibited in all enclosed workplaces, including offices, work areas, washrooms, and storage rooms.

    • Employees may only smoke or vape in designated outdoor smoking areas during scheduled breaks.

    • All cigarette and vape waste must be disposed of in designated receptacles.

    • Employees seeking to quit smoking or vaping will have access to support services upon request.

    • Non-compliance may result in disciplinary action.

  • Mckeone does not tolerate bullying or harassment in any form. Workplace bullying is defined as repeated, unreasonable behaviour that creates a risk to health and safety.

    Examples of Bullying

    • Verbal abuse

    • Exclusion or isolation

    • Psychological harassment

    • Assigning meaningless or degrading tasks

    • Unfair criticism or humiliation

    Responsibilities

    • Management will handle complaints promptly and confidentially.

    • Employees and subcontractors must comply with this policy and report any bullying incidents.

    • Retaliation against employees or subcontractors who report bullying will result in disciplinary action.

    • False accusations or spreading rumours about bullying may result in legal consequences.
